The Militia is YOU......

We've all heard that with rights come responsibilities. So what's the responsibility that comes with the right to keep and bear arms? It's the opening phrase of the Second Amendment--being part of a well regulated militia. A standing army is not what's necessary to the security of a free state, neither is a federal law enforcement agency.

Some years back, I realized that owning a few guns and occasionally sending some rounds down range does NOT equate to doing anything about diminishing rights. I looked for a militia unit in my area and eventually found it. I invited the unit's coordinator and three interested friends to dinner at my house. We asked a bunch of hard questions, inlcuding ones regarding racism, and he answered. After the meeting, three of us joined up and attended our first field training exercise (FTX). It was great fun.

The purpose of the militia is not to go head-to-head with the U.S. military. We are not professional soldiers. That, however, does not excuse us from learning what we can with one FTX per month. There is a lawful purpose for the militia, and it is stated in the Constitution, article 1, section 8.
